VGATRON v1.0
by Adrian B. Danieli
1992 Acumen Software
...............................................................................
This game is based on the classic, Tron. It does, however, add a
few elements not found in other Tron clones. For example, up to four players
can play simultaneously. These four players can be either four humans, four
computer players, or a mix of each. (There must, however, be at least a total
of two players).
...............................................................................
The object of game is to be the last player alive in the round.
Each player leaves a trail to mark where they have been on the play field.
If you bang into your trail, your opponent's trail, the exterior wall, or
any other obstacle, you will die (for that round). Play continues until only
one player remains.
To add to the game, you have limited control over the speed of your
ship -- you have 3 turbo bursts per round. When you press the key
corresponding to your turbo bursts the speed of your ship increases for a
random amount of time. You can increase your speed while a turbo burst is
in effect, thereby further increasing your speed. The maximum speed possible
is four times faster than normal. To make the game more interesting, you can
only control going faster, not slowing down (which is controlled by a random
timer).
Each players also has four bullets which can be used to create
an opening in an opponent's trail. Make sure to fire early, since the small
explosion created can destroy your ship if you run into it.
Also, each player has the ability to jump over trails or obstacles
four times. The distance you travel in the air depends on your current speed.
You must be closer to the object you are jumping at lower speeds since you will
not travel as far as you would if you were going faster.
...............................................................................
There are 10 play fields in the unregistered version. You will cycle
through each play field as you play the game, looping back to the beginning
after area 10.
...............................................................................
When you start VGATRON, you will see the title screen, followed by
a screen with some icons. There are four main boxes, representing each player.
Use the arrow keys to move from box to box. By pressing H while highlighting
a box, that player is set up as a human opponent. The keys to control that
player's ship are highlighted in the player's color. Pressing C will select
a computer opponent, or N will select no opponent (for that player). The
default settings are: player 1 - human, player 2 - human, player 3 - computer,
and player 4 - computer. When you have completed selecting opponents, go to
the last box. The words, "LET'S PLAY" should be highlighted. Simply press
ENTER to begin play.
NOTE: Pressing ALT-X or ALT-Q at any time will quit the game.
On the play field, use the keys assigned to your player to move.
They are always set up as a cross like this:
W 8 T I
| | | |
A--S--D 4--5--6 F--G--H J--K--L
| | | |
X 2 B ,
(player 1) (player 2) (player 3) (player 4)
The top key will increase your speed, the middle key will fire, the two keys
to the left and right of the middle key will turn you left or right, and the
bottom key will jump.
NOTE: The NUMLOCK key must be on in order for player 2 to use the numeric
keypad.
After each round the computer will tell you who won (if any one). From
this screen you can press (SPACE BAR) for the next round, (S) for the same
round again, (C) to change players, (R) to learn how to register, or (ESC)
to exit the game.
